I am considering making detailed ORBAT graphics of various military units and trying to get the details right. The details I have shared in past need some updates too. Posting the raw text here before doing all the boring and difficult (for me) drawing work.
This is the data I have for a generic PLA Army’s Combined Arms Battalion (CABn). Contrary to what some people think, standardisation in Chinese military is not absolute and there are still quite a few differences in composition and load outs. As there are multiple types of Combined Arms Brigades (CABs), there are different CABns too with different load outs too. This is just a general list and there will be some differences across different Group Armies and even within them. Corrections are welcome and appreciated.
Combined Arms Battalion HQ
- Commander: Lt Colonel (Zhong xiao)
- A Political Commissar. Usually of same rank as Battalion Commander.
- Deputy Commander: Major (Shao xiao)
- The Battalion HQ Commands the following Companies:
- Battalion HQ Company. Each HQ company has Platoon level or smaller units for Medical, Communications, Reconnaissance, Service and Support.Medical platoons have 2-4 ambulances and headed by a Doctor of Major rank.Reconnaissance platoons are equipped with small drones, ELINT capable vehicles, unknown number of snipers or marksmen and 2-3 teams for armed and technical reconnaissance.
- 4 Combat Companies. Each company comprises of 3 platoons each. Each platoon has 3 sections with 9 soldiers in each. Mobility is through tracked or wheeled APCs, 10-14 in number. High Mobility units have lightly armoured wheeled vehicles. Armoured Companies will have 3 Tank Platoons with 10-14 tanks each.
- 1 Firepower Company. Each such company is armed with 12-16 81 mm mortars divided in 2 platoons. Most units seem to have 1 ATGM platoon too, though I don’t know yet if these are all MPATGM or vehicle mounted. A grenade launcher platoon if present, is usually armed with 35 mm Automatic Grenade Launchers. For air defence, 1 platoon armed with 5-6 MANPADs or 23 mm AA guns is present.
- 1 Service Support Company. These have 1 platoon each for Communications, Supply & Transport, Maintenance, Recovery and Engineering.
