The establishment of the People\u2019s Liberation Army Strategic Support Force (SSF) in 2015\u20132016 was one of the most consequential outcomes of China\u2019s sweeping military reforms under Xi Jinping. Created to integrate the PLA\u2019s space, cyber, electronic warfare and related technological capabilities, the SSF represented Beijing\u2019s recognition that modern warfare increasingly depends on control of the information domain rather than solely on conventional military platforms. By consolidating previously fragmented capabilities under a single organisation directly subordinate to the Central Military Commission (CMC), the SSF aimed to improve coordination, accelerate decision-making and enhance China\u2019s ability to conduct informationised warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This article examines the origins, structure and functions of the SSF and analyses how its role has evolved following subsequent PLA reforms.
